SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police were looking Friday for a man who sparked a nearly six-hour standoff.

Just before 5:30 a.m. a domestic fight between a man and other members of his family at 1815 W. Sir Jeffrey Circle (630 North) ended with the other family members getting out of the house and calling police, said Salt Lake police detective Veronica Montoya.

When officers arrived in the Jordan Meadows neighborhood, they attempted to contact the man but received no reply. Because the family told police that there may be guns inside the residence, a SWAT team was called to surround the house, Montoya said.

The road between 600 North and 700 North in that area was closed, though SWAT team members assisted nearby residents get to work and school, she said.

There were no reports of injuries in the initial confrontation.

After several hours of attempting to communicate with the man, the SWAT team searched the house and learned that he was not there.

Police said Friday they were looking for Siaosi Latu, 26, for investigation of aggravated assault. Latu also had a warrant out for his arrest for a prior domestic violence case.

On Dec. 6, Latu allegedly punched his wife in the face and left the house before police arrived. The next day, detectives learned that Latu had returned to the house. That's where they found him and arrested him, according to court documents.

He was later charged with two counts of assault in Salt Lake County Justice Court. A warrant for his arrest was issued Monday when he failed to show up for a court appearance.

After Latu was arrested on Dec. 7 and taken to the Salt Lake County Jail, officers said Latu was in possession of methamphetamine. He was charged in 3rd District Court with possession of a controlled substance in a jail and possession of drug paraphernalia. An arrest warrant for that case was issued Feb. 10 when he failed to show up for court.

Latu's wife filed for a protective order on Dec. 12, according to court records.
