WEST VALLEY CITY — The Richfield Wildcats live to see another day in the Class 3A boys basketball tournament after a lopsided 49-36 victory over the Ben Lomond Scots Thursday at the Maverik Center.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter behind a hot-handed Tanner Jensen, who scored seven of the team’s 14 points.

“He was huge. He hit a lot of big shots for us,” Richfield's Brandon Willardson. “He was the hot man. We’ve had a bunch of players like that step up every game.”

The Wildcats continued a balanced scoring effort throughout the game, but Willardson credits the win on the team’s defense in the first quarter, and in the second half.

“In the first quarter we played our good defense, that’s what we do,” he said. “We made sure we picked it up after (halftime) and they didn’t score much after that. Our defense helps our offense.”

The Scots made a short run in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats never allowed Ben Lomond to get within 10 points.

“We’re just surviving and advancing right now,” Willardson said. “You’ve just got to get the win and grind it out. It’s always great to get a W in the state tournament.”

Richfield will play the winner of the Pine View-Uintah game Friday at 5:50 p.m. at the Maverik Center.
