OGDEN — It took two overtime periods to determine a winner, but the Olympus Titans pulled away at the end to claim a 56-49 victory over East in the first round of the 4A boys tournament.

With a 3-point lead late in regulation, the Titans looked to have the game wrapped up, but East forced overtime with an improbable 3-pointer by Dacian Spotted Elk at the buzzer. The heavily defended shot was a controversial made basket, with Olympus thinking Spotted Elk had a foot on the line.

“It was nuts and we were like, ‘oh crap,’ ” Olympus senior Jake Lindsey said “But at the same time I thought in my head we’ve been here before and we’re going to win this game.”

The two teams exchanged free throws in both overtimes, but two open-looks under the basket and a 12-point performance from Olympus sealed the victory and a trip to the next round of the tournament.

“I’m very proud of my kids for hanging in there and battling it and making a stop when the game was on the line,” Olympus head coach Matt Barnes said. “To be a good team and to win these games and to make runs, you’ve got to get stops when the game is on the line. And we found a way to do that.”

Olympus struggled much of the game to get its shots off, only scoring 4 points in the first quarter. But a 14-4 run in the second quarter gave the Titans a 6-point lead at halftime.

Lindsey lead Olympus in scores, finishing with 21 points on 6-of-26 shooting. He added 8 rebounds and 4 assists in the win, but was frustrated by his overall performance Tuesday.

“I didn’t finish layups; it was really not a great performance on my part,” Lindsey said. “I was pretty upset with myself. My teammates kept trusting me and they really picked me up when I was down.”

The Titans will play the winner of the Maple Mountain-Mountain Crest game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.
