PROVO — BYU beat San Diego 75-62 Thursday night behind 28 points from senior Tyler Haws, who along with Josh Sharp, Anson Winder and Skyler Halford were playing the final regular-season games of their careers at the Marriott Center.

“Anson (Winder) and I walked into the building at the same time, and we kind of just looked at each other and thought ‘this is weird,' Haw said. "I am just proud of our guys, proud of our effort. There are so many fun memories in this building. We put in so much hard work with these guys so just winning and finishing on a good note feels really good.”

“It is hard to take it all in," Winder said. "This was the last time to prepare for a home game. (The) last time you come here and go through the warm-ups and the anticipation of the game.

"It was weird, but after all the emotions of going through Senior Night, it felt good to get out and play and run around with the guys again.”

BYU head coach Dave Rose called the night "emotional" for the team’s four seniors, but he was pleased with his team beating San Diego this time around.

“After the game, Ty (Haws) mentioned to me that ‘I really can’t believe this is the last time I am going to play out there.’ Those are the times that you just realize that something big just happened,” Rose said.

Although the Cougars held a steady lead in the second half, they had a rough start in the first half and didn’t score until seven minutes into the game when Winder and Haws made the first Cougar points.

“We got off to a slow start,” Haws said. “We didn’t score, couldn’t buy a bucket for a while. I don’t know if we were still thinking about Senior Night or what, but we eventually got it going, and we just talked about being aggressive and attacking them.”

Rebounding was the difference-maker. BYU outrebounded San Diego, 38-23, and Winder contributed their improved rebounding to their mentality and toughness, while Rose said their rebounding had a huge impact on the win.

Haws needed 35 points to surpass Jimmer Fredette on BYU’s all-time scoring list but fell seven points short. BYU fans were disappointed they did see the record get broken at home in his final home game.

“I heard (the fans) chanting how many points I had left, but I just try to make plays and finish the game out strong,” Haws said. “It will be good to have it behind me for sure. I hear about it a lot. I just try to make as many plays as I can before this is over and just to enjoy the ride.”

In addition to his 28 points, Haws had five rebounds. Kyle Collinsworth totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Winder added 15 points.

BYU will face Portland and No. 3 Gonzaga on the road next week in their final West Coast Conference games before heading to Las Vegas for the West Coast Conference tournament.

“Next week will be as big a challenge you’ll ever have," Rose said. "I think our team is really focused. I don’t know if that’s because we are playing everybody a second time so we know them a little bit better or maybe the situation we are in, being on one side of the bubble trying to jump to the other, but I do know that these guys are really focused on our game plan.

“A lot of that is us dialed in our ability to rebound. I think we are in pretty good shape. We will find out. We have got a pretty tough road trip. We got swept on this thing last year so we will see how we do.”
