Author's Note: Each week, KSL brings you the stories of children living in foster care right here in our own communities. These kids need our help, and the opportunity to find a permanent home.SALT LAKE CITY — Karate takes discipline. Each kick and punch are deliberate and practiced, and 14-year-old Cameron is learning all of this.

Wednesday was his first lesson.

"It's just self-defense," said Cameron. "I like self-defense."

Cameron shares some of the same concerns as other boys his age.

"(Karate) gives me an opportunity, so if I'm getting bullied and someone throws a punch at me, I can defend myself and I'm not too hurt," he said.

Protecting himself from potential bullies isn't all he thinks about.

"(I want) to try and find a home and get adopted," he said.

Cameron has been living in the Utah Foster Care System since he was 3 years old.

He's ready to give finding a family a fighting chance.

"Just so I'm not in foster care and I'm not moving from home to home so often," he said.

Through all those moves, however, he's learned quite a bit about who he is and what he hopes for.

"I'm funny," he said. "I can make people laugh pretty easily. I want to have a lot of pets. I'm a dog and cat fan."

But most of all, he wants to be welcomed into a family so small celebrations, like earning his white belt, can be shared with those he loves.
