SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah football program finalized its coaching staff Tuesday, adding former Ute Lewis Powell as the team’s tight end coach.

Powell, who was the defensive line coach at Hawaii from 2012, will return to Utah where he spent two years as a graduate assistant (2009-10) and one as an administrative assistant (2011). Powell played as a defensive lineman at Utah for three years where he was named the 2003 Liberty Bowl Defensive Player of the Game his senior year.

Powell played in the Arena Football League from 2005-2008 with the Memphis Xplorers and the Utah Blaze.

As a defensive line coach for Hawaii, Powell improved the team’s defense and helped the team improve to the nation’s third best in tackles for loss per game (8.3) in 2013.
