SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation is advising motorists that lane splits presently in place on I-15 in south Davis County will extend to 2600 South in Bountiful beginning Tuesday, Feb. 3.

A part of the I-15 South Davis Improvements Project, the lane splits minimize traffic delays by allowing crews to replace bridges without closing portions of the freeway. The splits are being extended southward as work on I-15’s 2600 South interchange begins.

The northbound split extension will affect Bountiful’s 2600 South, 500 South and 400 North exits. On Tuesday night, northbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane while crews restripe I-15 between 2600 South and the existing split.

Southbound lane splits will now affect the 500 South (state Route 68) and 2600 South exits. Southbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane for restriping the following week on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the lane split zones. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to exit signs and change to the right lanes early enough to safely exit. For northbound I-15, the split will begin between I-215 and 2600 South in Bountiful. For southbound I-15, motorists exiting at 2600 South will enter the right lanes prior to 500 South in Bountiful.

Once the lane splits are extended, construction will include bridge replacement at 500 South and 2600 South, pavement and median removals, and paving operations. Construction on the new modified Continuous Flow Intersection, or mCFI, will begin for westbound traffic on 2600 South heading to southbound I-15.
