WEST VALLEY CITY — One man was killed and a woman critically injured following a violent crash early Friday.

David Wood, 51, of West Valley City, was pronounced dead at the scene. Meghann Powell, 29, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Just before 6 a.m., West Valley police say Wood was in a Ford F-250 pickup truck when he ran a red light at the intersection of 2700 West and 4100 South and slammed into the passenger side of a Nissan Sentra.

The impact from the collision caused the truck to flip on its side, slide across the road and slam into a nearby steel utility pole. Wood died at the scene.

Powell was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
