KEARNS — Two Unified police officers investigating a possible business break-in were forced to shoot and kill a dog Tuesday when the owner didn't call the dog off them, according to police.

About 10:15 p.m., employees at a business next to Popular Design Mill and Cabinet, 5265 W. 4820 South, heard an alarm going off in the cabinet shop, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

When officers arrived and began checking doors to look for a possible break-in, they found an open gate to an adjacent yard, he said. The officers went into the yard where there was a motorhome.

A man in the motorhome opened the window and the officers identified themselves as police, Hoyal said.

"Seconds later the door opened on the motorhome … and a dog came charging out at our officers in an aggressive manner," he said.

The officers yelled several times at the dog owner to call his animal back, Hoyal said. When he didn't and the dog continued to charge at the officers, the black Labrador was shot and killed.

The man in the motorhome was hired to keep an eye on the cabinet shop for the property owner, Hoyal said. The circumstances surrounding why the dog was let out of the motorhome were still being investigated. The man was not arrested.

The lieutenant said detectives were also still looking Wednesday at whether a burglary took place at the business.
