SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested after an officer found drugs packaged for sale in the man's possession during a traffic stop Monday, police said.

The officer first spotted Richard Brent Farnsworth, 52, parked in a car wash stall at 375 S. 300 East at around 10:41 p.m., according to a probable cause statement. It states the officer recognized the vehicle and driver from a previous case and thought it was suspicious the truck was dry and unwashed in the stall.

Shortly after the vehicle left the car wash, the officer pulled Farnsworth over for a traffic violation. Drug paraphernalia was found in Farnsworth’s front pocket during a search, according to the probable cause statement. Investigators said they also found “small baggies consistent with meth and black tar heroin” in his possession.

“Inside the vehicle, during inventory for impound, a bag was located with several more baggies of what appeared to be meth, cocaine and heroin,” the probable cause statement reads. “There was also a loaded handgun in the driver cab.”

Farnsworth told investigators that the firearm was stolen, police said. Close to $1,000 in cash was found during the search, according to the probable cause statement.

Farnsworth was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of drugs for distribution, felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor obstruction of justice and failure to yield when turning left. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
