ST GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A southern Utah man is appealing his prison sentence in the deaths of his wife and stepson.

Court records show a judge held a new hearing Tuesday in the case of 50-year-old Richard Andrew Jones, who pleaded no contest to murder charges in September and was sentenced to two life prison terms.

The Spectrum of St. George reports that Jones has said he doesn't remember killing them, but acknowledged that prosecutors had amassed significant evidence against him.

Prosecutor Ryan Shaum says Jones has fewer legal routes to overturn his sentence because he agreed to a plea deal.

Prosecutors say Jones fatally shot 19-year-old Owen Christopher Ellis and 42-year-old Michelle Jones at their Washington City home in February 2011.

His lawyers didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
