OREM, Utah (AP) — DeWayne Russell scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half to help Grand Canyon pull away and beat Utah Valley 83-74 on Thursday night.

Russell made a pair of free to throws and hit a jumper to give Grand Canyon a 68-64 lead with 4:29 to play, sparking a 19-12 surge down the stretch to seal it.

Russell was 6 of 12 from the floor and 11 of 12 from the line. Jerome Garrison scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Daniel Alexander finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Joshua Braun chipped in 11 points for Grand Canyon (11-8, 2-0 WAC), which has won six of its last seven games.

Zach Nelson had 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists to lead Utah Valley (6-10, 1-1). Marcel Davis scored 20 points and Mitch Bruneel added 11.
