SALT LAKE CITY — Junior running back Devontae Booker will return to the University of Utah for his senior year, Utah’s athletics department announced Wednesday.

“Over the break I had the decision of a lifetime to make about whether to go to the NFL or stay in school,” Booker said in a statement. “I talked to my family, friends and coaches on the decision and I’ve decided to stay at the University of Utah for my senior season.”

Booker finished the 2014 season rushing for 1,512 yards and 10 touchdowns, and was second in the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game (116.3). Booker was named to the first team All-Pac-12 in his first season with Utah.

Booker was a fan favorite, with many hoping to see him as a Ute for one more season. Following Utah’s win over Colorado State in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl, several fans on the field chanted that they wanted him to return, which evoked a smile from the running back.

“I will earn my degree in sociology this spring and further my education in a minor in something else that interest me,” Booker added. “I am excited to see what this season has ahead for the team and me, and this should be another great year for our program.”

Players have until Jan. 15 to declare for the draft. Junior offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi is the only underclassman from Utah to declare for the NFL Draft.
