SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee will serve as an appointed adviser to the new U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Lee's office announced Tuesday that McConnell had picked Utah's junior senator as one of four senators who will serve as a counsel to McConnell.

The others are Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio; Deb Fischer, R-Neb.; and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W. Va.

Lee says in a statement that he's excited for the opportunity and will use it to advocate conservative policies and trust and transparency in government.

Lee was elected to the Senate in 2010.
