PROVO — A Provo police officer responded to a call of a missing child, but when he got to the home he noticed something else was missing — a Christmas tree.

The child who was missing had returned home, but Officer Bryce Lewis noticed that the family didn't have decorations for the holidays.

"Around Christmas you notice the Christmas tree. At least the Christmas tree," Officer Lewis said. "We knew we had to do more."

Officer Lewis called in Officer Justin North and the two combined the cash they had on hand and donated it to the family. But this response still called for more.

Lewis purchased a Christmas tree while North and about 10 other officers bought dozens of toys and clothes.

"We filled up my police car," Lewis said.

The spouses of the officers wrapped each gift, and the officers carried the gifts in one by one.

"It almost brought tears to my eyes to watch how excited they were," said Lewis. "We have children and it's one of the most exciting days for children. To think if someone had to go without — it hurts to see that kind of stuff, so you just want to do what you can."

For these officers, it was no act of Christmas magic, simply a group of men filled with the holiday spirit.

"That's what Christmas is about," Lewis said.
