SALT LAKE CITY — Lawyers and other employees of the Salt Lake County District Attorney's office could be displaced up to six weeks after a broken pipe flooded their downtown office space.

Sometime on either Dec. 14 or early Dec. 15, a pipe broke on the the sixth floor of the office building at 111 E. Broadway Ave., damaging offices on the fifth, fourth and third floors.

District Attorney Sim Gill said Tuesday that extensive repairs were required to resolve the water damage, which could take four to six weeks to complete.

"We lost the use of about 30,000 square feet. We had to move a group of people out," Gill said. "We ended up relocating some people to different places while we continue to clean up and reorganize the office."

The teams in the district attorney's office affected by the flood include its juvenile prosecutors, gang team, attorneys who screen cases, and victim witness counselors who help prepare witnesses who testify in court.

Everyone has rallied. We haven't missed a beat. All our calendars are covered.

Gill said he has been proud of his employees' response to the ordeal, and he's grateful for the assistance of Salt Lake County's Information Services and Facilities Management divisions.

"Everyone has rallied. We haven't missed a beat. All our calendars are covered," he said.

The flood destroyed no evidence, but some paperwork was lost — "nothing that couldn't be replicated. Luckily, a lot of that is in our data systems, which were not compromised," Gill said.

Most important, the district attorney said his staff had not missed a beat in attending to its responsibilities.

"That's the most important part," Gill said.
