SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns rallied to help Primary Children’s Hospital win $20,000 Monday in a contest sponsored by CU Direct.

To celebrate its 20th year in business, CU Direct announced Dec. 2 it would be donating $20,000 to a Children’s Miracle Network hospital, according to the company website. People were able to vote for the Children’s Miracle Network affiliate they would like to win and Monday afternoon, Primary Children's Hospital tied for first place and won $20,000.

“We are looking to give back to a non-profit that’s been near and dear to CU Direct’s family for the past decade,” said CU Direct President and CEO, Tony Boutelle in a campaign video.

Voting was suspended Monday afternoon due to a widespread "Denial of Service" attack that impacted thousands of websites, according to the CU Direct website. CU Direct ended the voting several hours early due to the error and awarded both Primary Children's Hospital and Hurley Children’s Hospital of Flint, Michigan, the $20,000 award. The second place through fifth place hospitals were also awarded $5,000.

Local credit unions partnered in the campaign and America First Credit Union announced it would match the $20,000 donation if Primary Children’s Hospital won the contest. Several local businesses, including Real Salt Lake, also rallied to get Primary Children’s Hospital more votes.

Sharon Goodrich, Primary Children’s Hospital Foundation director over annual and corporate giving, said the donation would be used towards the greatest need at the hospital, but that it would likely go toward helping families pay for medical bills of a child.

“It will certainly be one of the nicest Christmas presents ever,” Goodrich said of winning the contest. “Every penny of it would go to help support the programs at the hospital that enhance the healing and treatment of children with complex injuries and illnesses. I think if we win, we all win.”

Individuals were able to select the credit union they are affiliated with when they voted for the Children’s Miracle Network and the credit union with the highest number of voters will co-present the $20,000 prize to the winning hospital.

Goodrich said more than 170 children’s hospitals participated in the contest.
