HYRUM — The annual Elk Festival is taking place Saturday, giving families an opportunity to see wild elk and participate in outdoor activities.

The Elk Festival will be held at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management area on State Route 101, according to a Division of Wildlife Resources news release.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be offered through a meadow at the ranch, where participants may be able to view wild elk.

Elk often migrate to the ranch area during cold and snowy weather when it's hard to find feed and the ranch managers provide feed for the animals.

“Once we start feeding the elk again, additional elk should come into the meadows,” Hardware Ranch manager Brad Hunt said in a news release.

Sleigh rides will be offered for $3-$5, starting Friday from 12-4:30 p.m. Saturday during the Elk Festival, the rides will be offered from 10-4:30 p.m. Rides will also continue Sunday from 10-4:30 p.m. and Monday from 12-4:30 p.m.

Other activities during the Elk Festival will include making Christmas ornaments from sagebrush, bitterbrush and other plants found at the ranch, the news release said.

Participants can also learn how to turn a pine cone into a bird feeder. The activities will run from 10-2 p.m.

Food will not be offered at the event, but participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch, the news release said. People are also encouraged to bring binoculars to view the elk.
