GRANTS, N.M. (KOB) — You can't hold a class in compassion, but women at the New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility say they've learned the quality by taking care of puppies around the clock.

When pregnant dogs or litters of puppies find themselves without a home, the NMWCF takes them in.

Through a special program, inmates take care of them around the clock. They help moms give birth and help orphaned puppies find their way.

Bernadette Setser, one of the women involved in the program, has helped several mothers give birth.

"It's messy but beautiful," Setser says. "You tie off the umbilical cord, make sure they're breathing, clean them off and give them to the mom."
