SALT LAKE CITY — A man was hospitalized Thursday after a driver — who police say was under the influence of alcohol or drugs — hit him while he was on his bicycle.

A car and cyclist were traveling west on 800 South near State Street shortly after 10:30 a.m. when the car wandered into the bike lane, hitting the bicyclist, according to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Purvis.

The driver, Russell Hobbs, 34, remained at the scene of the accident, police said. The cyclist was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Police did not release the name of the bicyclist.

Hobbs was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving on an alcohol-related revoked, suspended or denied license, possession of a controlled substance, and improper lane movement, Purvis said.
