LEHI — Fire burned through 14 garage units at a Lehi condo complex Friday night.

Crews responded to reports of a brush fire near 1200 W. 2500 North, according to Lehi Fire Battalion Chief Rick Howard. When they arrived, they realized the smoke wasn’t coming from the brush, but from the row of 30 garage units a the condo complex.

Firefighters used heavy saws to cut through the garages so they could combat the flames. They were able to stop the blaze before it destroyed all 30 units. In total, 14 units burned.

The fire started when two minors were playing with matches and a mattress behind the garages, Howard said. The mattress caught fire and the kids took off.

“They walked away from it and the mattress lit up and lit trees on fire, and then lit the units on fire,” Howard said.

No one was in the garage units at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt. Police spoke with one of the minors responsible but could not find the other involved, Howard said.

Investigators estimate damages to be more than $300,000.
