PROVO — Cal State Northridge's Ashlee Guay had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Tesse Boagni added 10 points off the bench to hold off BYU, 63-54, in an early tipoff at the Marriott Center.

BYU's Morgan Bailey scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to lift the BYU women’s basketball team to a win in its home opener Wednesday.

“Offensively, we just stood around a lot. It’s just something we have to work on,” BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. “This might be a team where I have to rework plays, get some motion and run around.”

Bailey led the Cougars with 22 points and Ashley Garfield added seven rebounds and five assists for a BYU team that got outrebounded by the Matadors, 48-31. After Bailey went 10-of-19 from the field, the rest of her team shot 11-of-36.

“We have to get some kids to step up,” Judkins said. “(Bailey) is carrying us, scoring-wise, and we’ve got to get some other people who can get some shots and move this team forward.”

Cassie Broadhead drained a 3-pointer after a perfect pass by Garfield with 7:32 left in the game to pull the Cougars (0-2) within three at 49-46, but the Matadors (3-0) would score on back-to-back possessions to pull ahead and slam the door.

“I was proud of them for fighting back,” Judkins said. “We had a few opportunities to cut it down, and then they’d make a play. That’s how you lose games.”

Bailey’s three-point play with 5:18 to go brought BYU back within four at 53-49, but every time the Cougars tried to grab the momentum, Northridge would take it right back.

“It happens. You have spurts, and when you have that momentum, you’ve got to stick it to them,” Judkins said. “I give my hat to them. We’d get something, and then a girl would hit a bank shot or get an easy basket. We can’t do that. When you’re down the whole game, you can’t make a lot of mistakes on offense and defense."

The Cougars will look to get their first win of the season Saturday when they host Nevada at 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Center.
