COOKINGTON — Chef Pasquale Sciarappa is Italian through and through, especially when it comes to food.

Sciarappa shares his Italian recipes and know-how on a blog called Orsara Recipes, boasting over 20,000 subscribers on YouTube. And it’s not difficult to see why he has a growing following: He’s personable, jolly and clear in his instructions, even if English isn’t his first language.

But it’s the pesky speed bumps of second-language acquisition that made his most recent video go viral in about a day. The video is a blooper reel of Sciarappa failing to pronounce one of his ingredients in English, and it is both hilarious and endearing.

The tricky ingredient in question? Worcestershire sauce.

To be fair, Worcestershire sauce is tricky for many native English speakers to pronounce, and as far as I’m concerned, its pronunciation should not be taken on lightly. I have vivid memories as a kid of seeing a bottle of Worcestershire sauce in the cupboard and bumbling out something akin to “worse-chester-sh-shire sauce,” a pronunciation that stuck for many years. In fact, I still hesitate every time I have to say it aloud.

Sciarappa valiantly makes dozens of efforts in just over a minute to say Worcestershire correctly, saying things like “one-je-shu-sha” and “one-jes-star-shine.” He becomes so exasperated and tongue-tied, he can’t even get the word “sauce” out in recognizable English.

It’s truly a delightful watch, and I’m glad Sciarappa had enough of a sense of humor about himself to post the video.

For anyone like me who is still wary of pronouncing Worcestershire sauce, here is Merriam-Webster’s pronunciation.
