PROVO — One Provo-based band called Date Night is using creative outlets to advocate for women’s self-worth.

It all started with a girl named Chloe.

Lead guitarist Zach Collier was baffled when his good friend Chloe didn’t see the great qualities she possessed.

And after talking to her about feeling unloved and unappreciated, Collier approached the band about writing a song for all girls who feel the same way.

“We wrote ‘Chloe’ as a true love song,” Collier said. “We wanted to show love and appreciation for people who deserved it.”

Just after the song’s conception, Collier noticed a flier on Brigham Young University’s campus from BYU Women’s Services and Resources that simply said, “You Are Beautiful.”

Feeling inspired, Collier and his band got the idea to make a music video featuring women whose reasons for feeling beautiful stretched far beyond their outer shells.

To make the music video, Date Night first set up a booth on Center Street in Provo to invite any woman who wanted to participate to advocate for their worth in the video.

Once enough women had volunteered, Date Night asked each of them to write a reason they thought they were beautiful on a poster board, and hold it in front of them.

The women wrote things like “because I love life” and “because I’m confident in who I am.”

After seeing the music video to completion, Date Night asked BYU Women’s Services and Resources, an organization that raises awareness about negative body image, depression and anxiety, if they could donate it to them.

“Chloe” was just the catalyst for Date Night’s involvement in the BYU organization.

Shortly after the video was released, the band members attended the BYU Women’s Services and Resources open house, where they were recognized for their contribution.

“At the open house, we provided a male perspective about how we see women’s issues,” Collier said. “We talked about how it would be nice to educate men about how to respond to these problems.”

Each Date Night member filled out a survey at the event, and learned that it’s not always beneficial to focus on a girl’s outer beauty.

“When girls feel so unattractive, guys always respond with ‘no, you look beautiful,’ and they’re still focused on the outside instead of who they really are,” Collier said. “Just by bringing up beauty all the time, it adds more stress.”

Collier has since implemented this principle, particularly with his fiancee.

“I try to come up with different ways to tell her than I love her other than 'you’re so beautiful,' because she’s more than that to me,” Collier said.

Date Night is making strides to promote women’s worth wherever they go, Collier said.

Each band member is a registered volunteer for BYU Women’s Services and Resources, and they are also getting involved with another organization, We Are One In Three.

We Are One in Three was created as a safe haven for survivors of sexual assault.

Date Night met with a We Are One In Three founder, Brittany Plothow, and discussed the importance of raising awareness about sexual assault and helping people to know the boundaries of sexual intimacy between males and females and what that means.

We Are One In Three plans to host a concert next year, where Date Night hopes to be a featured artist, Collier said.
