WEST VALLEY CITY — Police are looking for the driver of a car who struck and critically injured a pedestrian Tuesday evening.

The driver of the car "was involved in a couple of accidents" before hitting the pedestrian who appeared to be on a skateboard around 7:20 p.m., according to West Valley Police Lt. Matt Elson.

Brynly Margetts was taking out the trash when she looked over and saw a car "driving sporadically" down the road, sparks flying.

"The car hit a curb, completely lost its bumper," Margetts said. "The car (was) completely at a slant, just emitting all of these sparks."

The 1997 gold Acura then hit the pedestrian, a 21-year-old West Valley man who appeared to have been riding a skateboard on a shoulder of the road at 4215 S. 4000 West, Elson said.

The injured man was barely breathing after he was hit, according to witnesses. He was critically injured and taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital.

"It is unknown at this time if he will survive his injuries," Elson said.

The vehicle drove into an area neighborhood where the driver left his car and fled on foot, police said.

Minutes before hitting the pedestrian, the driver of the Acura hit one vehicle, pushing it into another near 4700 South and 4000 West, police said.

Police are searching the neighborhood for the suspect and following leads.

Anyone with information is asked to call 801-840-4000.
