CEDAR CITY — When Southern Utah University professor of communication, Jon Smith first heard that Doritos was doing a “Crash The Super Bowl” contest, he knew he wanted to submit a commercial.

As an award-winning videographer, Smith didn’t just want to submit something he could be proud of, but something the whole community of Cedar City could be proud of, too. Smith also thought it would be a great opportunity for his students to make something great, and something that “the world could see.”

While Smith had the idea to make the commercial, that is where the bulk of his involvement in the project stopped. The commercial was directed by SUU professional-in-residence, Ellen Treanor, but it was the students who were charged with the task of writing the script, designing the set and costumes, as well as casting members in the community.

Filmed entirely at Cedar High School, the commercial features college, high school and middle school students, as well as dancers from a local studio. Even the city’s mayor, Maile Wilson, makes a cameo appearance on the arm of SUU’s Special projects librarian, Matt Nickerson, who plays the physics teacher.

Nickerson delivers the introductory line, “Lines break, circles bend, squares collapse, but, triangles are bold. They are symbols of power, and represent manliness.” An impressionable young teen looks at his Dorito chip, as his symbol of “manliness,” that would soon turn him into a bully-defeating, lady’s man.

When Nickerson was asked to be in the commercial, he jumped at the opportunity. “I loved the idea that the students got to do something real. The equipment used was all high-definition, it was like being on a real movie set. The students were all really professional. It was a lot of fun to do.”
