COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A West Jordan man was arrested after police suspected he was smoking marijuana in his grandmother's room at an assisted living center.

Supervisors at The Coventry, 6898 S. 2300 East, had smelled a strong odor of marijuana around 7 p.m. Friday. As police approached the resident's room where the odor was originating, the odor became even stronger, according to Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Corbett Ford.

Keaton Yates, 24, came out of the room to talk to the officers and had a smoldering joint in his pocket, Ford said. Yates claimed to have been smoking marijuana prior to visiting his grandmother, who is living at The Coventry.

He went up there to either get high with grandma or use grandma's room and hope that nobody would call him out.

"He went up there to either get high with grandma or use grandma's room and hope that nobody would call him out," Ford said.

Yates was also found to have oxycodone pills in his possession and a butterfly knife, according to Ford. Yates was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of a weapon violation, possession of marijuana and prohibited acts with a controlled substance.

A warrant was issued for Yates last week, based on a misdemeanor charge of assault, involving domestic violence, as he had not appeared in court.
