IVINS — A bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run accident Tuesday evening has been identified and police have located the driver, police said.

Police were alerted to the accident on Old Highway 91 near the Kayenta community of Ivins around 8 p.m., according to Santa Clara Ivins Police Department public information officer Chad Holt. A passerby hit the bicycle in the road and stopped to locate the bicyclist, Holt said. The passerby found the bicyclist on the side of the road and called 911.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders, and he was identified as Steve Jed Canfield, 57, of St. George.

Holt said there were no witnesses to the accident and no leads, but the alleged driver of the vehicle contacted police late Tuesday evening. Police are interviewing the driver and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon, but the investigation is ongoing, Holt said.

Holt said Old Highway 91 is a common road for bicyclists.
