SALT LAKE CITY — A 19-year-old driver was seriously injured when his car slid into a semitrailer while traveling at least 100 mph on city streets, police said.

Lt. Carl Merino with the Salt Lake City Police Department said it happened near 5700 West and 700 South around 8 p.m. Sunday.

A man was servicing a semi on the side of the road when he saw the car speed by. The driver apparently lost control and the car slid into the side of the parked semi, moving it about 8 feet, Merino said.

He also said this is a common street racing area, and that may have been why the driver was going so fast.

The driver was taken to a hospital with very serious head injuries. He was the only person in the car.
