VERNAL — A car crashed into a pawn shop Monday after a man attempted to start the vehicle while it was in gear, police said.

The 21-year-old driver had permission to borrow the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier from a friend, according to the Vernal Police Department. Investigators said he was attempting to start the vehicle when it lunged into the front of Jiffy Pawn located at 630 W. Main Street in Vernal.

The car knocked down several displays and pushed the aisles 26 feet into the shop, according to manager Jerry Bodily. He said there were eight customers in the shop at the time of the accident, but that no one was in the area where the car came to a stop.

Police said the driver was not issued a citation because the accident took place on private property. No one was injured during the incident.

There was “extensive” damage done to both the shop and car, according to police. They said Jiffy Pawn plans to maintain normal business hours while it is being repaired.
