Utah alumnus Alex Smith leads Kansas City to victory in NFL Week 3

SALT LAKE CITY — Week three in the NFL did nothing to dispel the rumor of Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith being a game manager.

Smith, who has been dogged by the rumor for most of his career, delivered another strong performance, completing 19 passes and throwing for 186 yards in the Chiefs’ 34-15 win over the Miami Dolphins.

The former Utah quarterback also threw three touchdowns in the win.

Minnesota running back Matt Asiata rushed 12 times for 36 yards in Minnesota’s 20-9 loss to New Orleans. Utah alumnus Steve Smith Sr. caught five passes for 101 yards as Baltimore beat Cleveland, 23-21.

Several former Utah defensive standouts had strong performances in week three. Paul Kruger made three tackles for the Browns in their loss to Baltimore, while Miami’s Derrick Shelby had one tackle and a sack in the Dolphins’ loss to Kansas City. Sean Smith made three tackles for the Chiefs in the win. Also, Carolina’s Star Lotulelei made three tackles in the Panthers’ 37-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Also, New England defensive lineman Sealver Siliga made a tackle in a 16-9 Patriots win over the Oakland Raiders, and San Diego safety Eric Weddle made 10 tackles in a 22-10 win over the Buffalo Bills.

In Detroit, Lions defensive lineman Ezekiel Ansah made two tackles in a 19-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. Also, Baltimore tight end Dennis Pitta had three catches for 12 yards.

Utah State alumnus Bobby Wagner made 11 tackles in Seattle’s 26-20 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos. Fellow Aggies alumnus Robert Turbin had one catch for four yards in the Seattle win.
