WASHINGTON CITY — A woman who deals with limited mobility as a result of numerous health problems noticed something amiss following a visit from her housekeeper late last week.

Prescription pain drugs had disappeared, leading her to suspect the man she'd hired to take care of her home had pocketed the pills. The woman told police she has cancer, is bed-ridden and had relied on Marlin Dawahoya to keep the place clean.

"The officer contacted the victim and determined possibly this had occurred," Washington City Police spokesman Ed Kantor said.

An arrest report filed in the case said Dawahoya, 24, admitted to taking the medications during a text-message exchange with the victim. He also reportedly carried several Oxycontin pills in his pocket to an interview with police on Friday.

Officers arrested and booked Dawahoya into the Washington County jail. He made an initial court appearance Friday afternoon on charges including exploitation of a vulnerable adult, possession of a controlled substance and theft.

"It's just a good idea to keep valuables locked up," Kantor said. "Prescription medications now are often targeted by people."

Court records show Dawahoya has been appointed a public defender.
