PARLEYS CANYON — Excessive speed most likely played a role in a motorcycle crash that killed a man in Parleys Canyon on Saturday afternoon, a Utah Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Around 1:30 p.m., a green sport bike was headed east on I-80 and went off the road about a mile before the East Canyon off-ramp, UHP Sgt. Larry Mower said.

“From what witnesses were telling us, he was driving down the freeway and had passed a couple cars and moved over from the inside lane to the outside lane,” Mower said.

Witnesses said the sport bike went off the road to the right and lost control. Mario Lopez-Jimenez, 43, from Kearns, was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

Mower did not have an estimate on how fast the motorcycle was going, but he said investigators were working to determine an approximate speed. Lopez-Jimenez was not wearing a helmet, the sergeant said.

“I know there are a lot of advocates out there that believe that they shouldn’t have to wear helmets, and the law doesn’t say they have to wear helmets,” Mower said, “but I think, from a safety standpoint, I would stress … that you really need to wear your helmet. It will make a world of difference.”
