With fall in the air, yellow school busses on the streets, and backpacked kids roaming the sidewalks, there's no doubt that school is back in session. But for many adults, the back-to-school season may evoke reminders of an unfulfilled dream. These days, more adults than ever before are heading back to school.

According to Northeastern University, the 10 years spanning 2000 to 2010 saw a 42 percent increase of adults aged 25 and older returning to school.

But a shiny new degree might not be what education-seeking adults are after—fortunately, the reasons to hit the books again go way beyond the cap and gown.

Follow career trends

You may think that a four-year degree makes all the difference in your career, but some sources are nipping that idea in the bud. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13 of the fastest-growing occupations and 19 of the 20 occupations expected to generate the most new jobs require less than two years of education.

That's great news for adults who are intimidated by the idea of heading to the university. Students can complete a certificate or credential program in substantially less time than it would take to earn that bachelor's degree.

Save some cash

Going back to school isn't exactly cheap these days. According to MSN Money, tuition costs in the United States have increased by 500 percent since 1985—not to mention that a full-time education often requires students to quit their full-time job.

But getting back in the game can actually be more affordable than you think. For example, there are local institutions that provide professional career education, offer affordable programs with online flexibility, and ensure you gain experience while you're completing an education. Programs like this might be the solution you're looking for to leave a job you aren't passionate about and to start fresh.

Stop dilly-dallying

If you're unsatisfied with your current career, you're not alone. In fact, the 2013 Gallup State of the American Workplace Report showed that a mere 30 percent of American employees are actually engaged and inspired at work.

That leaves a lot of workers who could be happier in another career field. Unfortunately, changing careers without experience can be tough—and you may have to start at the bottom (and take a hefty pay cut) to break into a particular field.

But education helps you skirt the experience issue and gets you into your dream job as fast as possible. This is particularly true of certificate programs that enable you to work in a particular field; often you'll need a year or less of training.

Reach your potential

You may already have a dream career in mind; if that's the case, start following it! But with 44 percent of college graduates currently unemployed or underemployed, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, make sure you have a clear idea of where you're going and how to get there.

Specific career and credential preparation may be the solution to help you become the perfect candidate for your dream job. Many certificate-granting institutions also provide career placement services, helping you break into your desired field as quickly as possible.
