SALT LAKE CITY — Police are searching for two men who were foiled in their attempts to rob a credit union and a bank Tuesday afternoon.

The first attempted robbery occurred at the Security Service Federal Credit Union at 1467 S. Main St. around 3:15 p.m., according to Salt Lake police detective Veronica Montoya. A vehicle with two men inside pulled up to the drive-thru teller window, and the men demanded money while threatening to shoot the teller, Montoya said.

The teller moved away from the window and ran to get the manager of the credit union, and the men drove away, Montoya said.

The men were wearing black, long-sleeved shirts and ski masks at the time of the incident. The vehicle they were driving was described as a dark green Honda Civic with yellow racing stripes on the side.

Police believe the same men drove to a KeyBank at 410 S. 400 East around 3:55 p.m. A customer inside the bank saw a dark vehicle pull into the parking lot with two people inside wearing ski masks, Montoya said. The customer believed the people were going to rob the bank and called 911.

The men apparently saw that the customer had noticed them, and they drove away. The license plate on their car was covered, Montoya said.

Montoya said both instances demonstrated good prevention tactics on the part of the victims.

“If you see something, say something,” Montoya said. “I think sometimes we are just so busy we’re not looking around at other vehicles around us. We want you to be aware of your surroundings for sure.”

Anyone with information about either attempted robbery can call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
