OGDEN — A fire at the Weber County Fairgrounds caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.

A piece of equipment inside a storage building sparked the fire, according to Brandon Thueson, Weber Fire District fire marshal. Investigators say the fire was likely accidental.

Fire units from Weber Fire District and Ogden City fire department responded to the fire at the fairgrounds, 1000 N. 1200 West, at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday. The shed was "charged full of smoke with a lot of heat," Thueson said. The building held lawn maintenance equipment for the fair.

Crews found dark and hot conditions inside the building, according to Thueson. Because the building was "sealed up" the fire contained itself, he said. Other pieces of equipment, including lawn mowers, tractors and ATVs, fueled the fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames within 30 minutes.

Machines and the building itself were damaged in the blaze which caused an estimated half million dollars in damage.

"In speaking with ... the individual over the maintenance department for the fair grounds said you know the whole time he's been here he's never had an incident like this, so it is unique for the fairgrounds and will be a significant impact to them," Thueson said.

No one was injured in the fire.

The fire did not threaten an animal shelter next door.
