SALT LAKE CITY — One home was damaged and another was threatened by flames from an early morning fire.
Investigators believe the fire started around 2 a.m. near the carport of a home in the vicinity of 1700 South and 2200 East and quickly spread to the house.
Two homes were evacuated. One sustained significant damage, the other has minor damage but was evacuated as a precaution. The fire also caused some power lines to fall toward the back of the damaged house.
All of the residents and their pets made it out safely.
"The benefit here is that these occupants were awakened and alerted to the fire and to the emergency because of their smoke detectors. They were operating, they were fuctional and they served their purpose," said Paul Harding of the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire and said matches were found in the street in front of the burned home.
One family returned to their home. The Red Cross was assisting the family of the other home affected by the fire.
