FARMINGTON — Lagoon unveiled its newest attraction Thursday, a 208-foot-tall coaster that reaches 70 mph.

Lagoon officials displayed plans for the newest coaster, named Cannibal, in a press conference Thursday morning. The coaster has been in development for the last five years and will cost $22 million. Assembly on Cannibal began after the announcement, and the coaster will debut for the 2015 season.

“We are thrilled and so excited to unveil a project on which Lagoon has been working for more than five years. This will be our newest, biggest and greatest ever attraction,” said Julie Freed, Lagoon’s director of special events.

The coaster will lift riders up 208 feet in the air before free falling over a 116-degree angle and into an underground tunnel. Riders will travel over three inversions during the 2½-minute ride.

“In our collective minds, it will eat other coasters in their tracks,” Freed said.

Local suppliers and vendors are providing about 75 percent of the coaster.
