CEDAR CITY—The Southern Utah University football team had a tough loss at Nevada over the weekend. Now the Thunderbirds will get the chance to rebound this weekend when they play at Southeastern Louisiana. This will be the first of four games against 2013 FCS playoff opponents for SUU.

SUU lost to Nevada 28-19. Although it was a difficult outing, there were some bright spots for SUU such as Chinedu Ahanonu, who was outstanding on defense recording 28 tackles, the second most in a single game for SUU. However, SUU can’t dwell on the Nevada loss as they will have to be on top of their game to compete with Southeastern Louisiana.

SLU is ranked third in the FCS, according to the Sports Network and FCS coach polls. SLU opened up their season with a 44-3 win over Jacksonville and racked up 564 yards of total offense while holding Jacksonville to just 222 total offensive yards.

SLU is led by senior QB Bryan Bennett who is a Walter Payton Award candidate. This could already be an advantage for SLU as SUU is still experimenting with their QB situation. At Nevada, both Aaron Cantu and Ammon Olsen took multiple snaps for the Thunderbirds.

This weekend will be a great opportunity for SUU to get back on their feet while playing one of the best FCS teams this year.

SUU will play SLU in Hammond, Louisiana, on Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT).
