SALT LAKE CITY — Utah senior Kaelin Clay was named this week's Pac-12 and CBSSports.com's specialist of the week after his two touchdowns on special teams against Idaho State Thursday.
In his first appearance for Utah, Clay returned a 46-yard punt to give the Utes a 28-7 lead in the second quarter over the Bengals. Clay then went 100 yards in a kickoff return in the third quarter to give Utah a 49-14 lead.
Clay became the first Pac-12 player since 1999 to score a touchdown on a punt return and kickoff return in the same game. The last player to do that was California's Deltha O'Neal. Clay was also the only player in the Pac-12 and one of four in FBS to return a kickoff for 100 yards during opening weekend.
USC quarterback Cody Kessler and UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks were named offensive and defensive players of the week for the Pac-12. Kessler was 25-of-37 for 394 yards and 4 touchdowns. Kendricks had 16 total tackles and forced a fumble, which resulted in a 75-yard touchdown for UCLA. Kendricks then had an interceptions the next series against Virginia, which he returned for a 37-yard touchdown.
Other Utah players named as honorable mentions for the week were running back Devontae Booker and defensive end Nate Orchard.
