PAYSON — Police located and arrested a man shortly after he robbed a Payson credit union Friday morning, police said.
The armed robbery occurred at the Nebo Credit Union at 201 E. 100 North around 9:30 a.m., according to Payson police Lt. Bill Wright. A man entered the credit union and demanded money from a teller while pointing a gun, Wright said. The man was given an undisclosed amount of money and then fled the credit union.
He was seen driving away in a champagne colored passenger car with Nevada plates, Wright said. Police were alerted to the robbery when a credit union employee pressed a panic button and officers immediately began patrolling the area looking for a matching vehicle.
A Utah Highway Patrol officer located a car on I-15 near Springville that matched the description. A felony stop was made at a Love’s gas station in Springville and the stolen money and a black handgun were located in the vehicle, Wright said.
Upon further investigation, officers discovered the vehicle had been stolen out of Las Vegas by force with a black semi-automatic handgun, according to booking statements. The man was arrested without incident. He did not give his name to police, but officers discovered identification in the car for Michael David Statton, 29.
He was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery.
