SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's newest winery will begin crushing grapes in an unlikely place.

The Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission approved a winemaking license Tuesday for Vintage Reserve Estates in the polygamous southern Utah town of Hildale.

"It's one of the biggest, cleanest, best-equipped wineries I've seen," said Abe Zader, a Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control compliance specialist.

Five people from Hildale and Colorado City, Arizona, own the business, Zader said. The border cities are home to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Vintage Estates has already contracted to buy grapes and will start making red and rosé wines as soon as he sends it the license, Zader said. It plans to sell the wine through the state's alcohol control department, he said. It would be the 14th winery in Utah.

Zader said the town also intends to apply for a package agency, which is a smaller version of a state liquor store.
