SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested Friday after police say he jumped into another man's car and forced him to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash.

Just after midnight, a 35-year-old man was parked in front of an apartment complex near 500 West and 200 South talking on his cellphone when another man jumped into the passenger seat, said Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan.

The suspect claimed he had a gun in his pocket and told the driver to give him money, McGowan said. When the victim replied that he didn't have any, the suspect ordered him to drive to an ATM machine.

The man drove to a 7-Eleven, 111 W. 800 South, and went inside while the alleged gunman waited in the car. The man asked the clerk if there was an ATM and also tried to tell the clerk he was being kidnapped and to call police, McGowan said.

The suspect, apparently growing suspicious about what the victim and the clerk were talking about, went inside the store and told the man to get back in the car, he said. The robber then told the man to drive him back to the original location, McGowan said.

As the two were driving back, they spotted two Salt Lake police officers who had pulled over another vehicle on an unrelated traffic stop. The suspect told the driver to turn in the opposite direction. But as soon as they made the turn near 400 South and 200 West, there were two more patrol cars with their red and blue lights on, McGowan said.

This time, the driver pulled up behind them, got out and yelled to the officers that he was being kidnapped. The officers placed the passenger in handcuffs as they sorted out what was happening, McGowan said.

Although no weapon was found, Damon Anthony Greenberry, 34, was arrested for investigation of robbery, kidnapping, possession of drug paraphernalia, giving false information to an officer in addition to several misdemeanor warrants.

Greenberry's lengthy criminal history includes a conviction of attempted drug possession in 2013 for which he was sentenced to 180 days in jail. That conviction came just months after a similar drug possession conviction for which he was sentenced to 120 days in jail, according to court records. In 2012, he was convicted of assault with substantial bodily injury and sentenced to 120 days in jail. In 1999 he was convicted of felony forgery.
