SALT LAKE CITY — Hours after the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit released the name and photo of its newest Public Enemy No. 1, a member of a violent prison gang who recently escaped from a federal halfway house was behind bars.

Numerous tips from the public led police to Charley Louis Sanford, 28, who was arrested Thursday night in Ogden and booked into Weber County Jail.

Sanford has a criminal record that includes convictions in both state and federal court. He pleaded guilty in 2012 in 3rd District Court to attempted assault by a prisoner. He pleaded guilty that same year in another case to giving false information, and in yet another case to felony drug possession.

Most recently he was sentenced in 2013 to 21 months in federal prison for bank fraud, according to court records. He was ordered to be placed on supervised release for five years following his prison sentence, during which time he was not allowed to have any drugs or alcohol and was ordered to continue with both substance abuse and mental health treatment.

Sanford was also sentenced to federal prison in 2006 for using a firearm while committing a violent crime, court records state. But in 2010, he walked away from a halfway house, was recaptured, convicted of escape and given a new sentence.
