SANDY — Real Salt Lake assistant coach Paul Dalglish came to Salt Lake City eight months ago after a significant career in Texas, making 11 appearances across two seasons for the Houston Dynamo and earning Premier Development League coach of the year honors with the Austin Aztex.

After less than a year in the Beehive State, he’s headed home.

Dalglish was named the head coach of the Aztex on Monday, a position that begins immediately as the Texas club prepares for third-division USL Pro play in 2015. RSL has begun its search for a new assistant coach and expects to make a hire by the end of the week, according to a news release.

“I will be sad to leave the fantastic players and staff that have become friends behind in Salt Lake City,” Dalglish said in a statement. “They have made me a better coach and a better person. The challenge of leading the Aztex in their inaugural year in the professional ranks was one I couldn't refuse.”

Dalglish’s staff will include current Aztex head coach Manuel Buentello, who will remain as an assistant and scout for the organization, according to the Austin American Statesman.

Dalglish spent two years as head coach of the Aztex, leading them to the 2013 PDL national championship and being named PDL coach of the year the same season. The native of Glasgow, Scotland, helped RSL to an MLS record-tying 12 match unbeaten streak to start the 2014 season and leaves just after the Salt Lake side won back the Rocky Mountain Cup from rival Colorado with a 1-0 win in Commerce City, Colorado.

“We are happy for Paul and his family to get this opportunity that he just couldn’t say no to. We appreciate his work with us the last eight months and wish him the best in his new adventure,” RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey said in a statement.
