TAYLORSVILLE — Police were investigating an officer-involved shooting Friday morning.

Police identified the suspect as Jared Roskelley, 31, in a tweet.

Officers were called to a home near 5514 S. Ridgecrest Drive (3400 West) after shots were fired near the rear of the residence but wounding no one, according to Salt Lake County Sheriff James Winder.

When officers arrived, Roskelley exited the home and got into a verbal altercation with police. He brandished a firearm, began to point it at police and gunfire was exchanged between him and police, Winder said.

Roskelley was shot at least once, and the officers, who were not harmed, gave him immediate medical attention, the sheriff said. The man was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said Ridge Crest Drive at 5470 South will be closed for the next four to six hours to north and southbound traffic.

An investigation into the incident was underway Friday. Police said they had been to the residence before, and the man who was shot has a history with police, but no police record. Police also believe that they incident may have started as a domestic dispute.

"There is a history at the home here," Winder said. "We're trying to sort out the volume of that and how it plays into this incident."

Neighbor Israel Paradise said he heard the commotion and gunshots from his home.

"I heard them arguing in the backyard, catty-corner backyard from mine," he said. "Then I heard a gunshot (and) came outside. I thought it might be a firework."

Paradise said police arrived shortly afterward.

"It got really quiet after the gunshot, and then about five minutes later, I hear a cop yelling, 'Put it down! Put it down!' " Paradise said. "And then he let out about three shots."

Neighbor Gracie Zendejas said her nieces were "freaking out" and the neighborhood became hectic.

"It think it's crazy. It's only a few houses down. If it (got) crazy, it could have come in the backyard," Zendejas said. "It is pretty scary. I never thought something would happen like that."
