SALT LAKE CITY — Television hasn’t been kind to the Salt Lake Bees this season.

Coming into the third game of a four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers, the Bees were 1-3 in televised home games, and looking to change their fortunes in a nationally televised game Thursday. Unfortunately, Salt Lake saw the pattern of losing continue, falling 4-1 in front of 10,752 fans at Smith’s Ballpark.

Tacoma’s first run was scored on the first pitch of the game, as Rainiers center fielder Xavier Avery hit a solo home run to right field to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bees had one of their best scoring opportunities in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded. With two outs, designated hitter Tommy Field hit a fly ball to left field that was a loud foul ball. On the next pitch, Tacoma relief pitcher Blake Bievan struck out Field to end Salt Lake’s scoring threat.

Bees pitcher Chris Volstad took the loss, despite throwing six and two-thirds innings of two-run baseball.

The Rainiers also scored a run in the seventh as catcher Humberto Quintero scored on a triple from right fielder Julio Morban. Tacoma scored two runs in the eighth on a two-run home run by second baseman Ty Kelly.

Salt Lake did finally score a run in the ninth as Shawn O’Malley scored on a Luis Jimenez infield single.

Bees pitcher Chris Volstad took the loss, despite throwing six and two-thirds innings of two-run baseball.

The Bees and Rainiers conclude their four-game series at Smith’s Ballpark on Friday.

Note: Television star Ty Burrell threw out the first pitch for the game. The game’s national broadcast on CBS Sports Network included guest appearances by Burrell, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and Bees general manager Marc Amicone.
