SALT LAKE CITY — Police reported a man was holding a knife during a robbery Thursday.
A 59-year-old transient man entered the Big Lots located at 370 E. 200 South at around 10 a.m. and grabbed a large kitchen knife off of the shelf before going to the register and using it to demand money, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
"For some reason he sat the knife down on the counter," said Sgt. Robin Heiden. "The manager was right there. (He) reached over and grabbed the knife and the male suspect pretty much gave up at that point."
It was originally reported that the man held the knife to a cashier's neck, but police later said that did not happen.
The man, who was identified as Michael Hardgrove, was taken into custody, according to a tweet from the Salt Lake City Police Department at 10:30 a.m.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
