DUCHESNE COUNTY — Three people riding motorcycles were injured Saturday after one of them hit a deer and the others collided with the first driver, prompting Utah Highway Patrol to temporarily close US-40.

Two motorcyclists were traveling side by side near mile marker 93, close to Bridgeland, when one of them hit a deer, causing a woman passenger on the other motorcycle to be struck by the deer, according to UHP Cpl. Brett Hansen.

A third motorcyclist traveling behind the two side-by-side drivers then crashed into them and the deer, Hansen said.

The woman, 49-year-old Tamela Nell, suffered a shoulder injury and two of the men driving the motorcycles were also injured.

Only one man, who suffered a head injury, was not wearing a helmet, according to Hansen.

Robert Garcia, 50, of Tooele, David Merchant, 39, of Tremonton, and David Slavenwhite, 48, of West Jordan, were driving the motorcycles, Hansen said.

Hansen asked that all motorcyclists remember to wear a helmet.

"We are half way into Utah's 100 deadliest days and wearing a helmet is going to ensure citizens have the best possible chances of walking away from accidents like this," he said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
