UTAH COUNTY — A 12-year-old boy from Las Vegas was severely injured after a fall near Emerald Lake on Mt. Timpanogos Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Utah County Search and Rescue teams responded to Emerald Lake around 2:45 p.m., according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A 12-year-old boy had been walking around the snow fields with his mother and teenaged sister when he fell near the lake and severely cut his leg, Cannon said.

The mother reported that the boys leg was "bleeding badly," but she had controlled the bleeding with a bandage, Cannon said.

A medical helicopter was dispatched, but the pilot wasn’t able to land in the area so search and rescue teams hiked about 5 miles to assist the boy.

"He did sustain some sort of cut or laceration, and he could be going into shock," Cannon said. "Anytime that's happening, that's a serious concern."

The teams determined that it would be unsafe to carry the boy out based on his injures.

"A second LifeFlight helicopter with a hoist responded and they were able to hoist the boy from the mountain to the trailhead parking lot," Cannon said. "From there he was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center."

Cannon did not report further on the condition of the boy.

Personnel from the North Fork Fire Department at Sundance, the Utah County Sheriff's Office and volunteers with Utah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue responded to the incident.
